I am really surprised reading about belts lasting from 30.000 and up to 100.000 km on this list. Well, I 'll tell you my story: I bought my new Savage in 1996. 2 years and 20.000 km. later the belt broke. I replaced the belt and ensured it was not tensioned too much, having red some postings not advising too much tension here. Today, on my way to work, the belt broke again. Now the bike has 36.000 km. on it, in other words the belt didn't last for more than 18.000 km. this time!!!
Weather conditions are not good here in Norway, often we have salty streets during autumn and spring, but anyway, I nearly do not believe people riding 30 - 40 maybe 80.000 km. on one belt!!!
